Today Denmark is world leader in district heating. District heating covers 46 % of Danish heating needs. One of the proposals for Denmark to comply with CO2 targets is to extend district heating to cover up to 70 % of Danish heating needs.
Vestforbrænding’s district heating supply constitutes an integral part of the coherent district heating system in the Greater Copenhagen Area, where environment-friendly and energy-efficient waste-based heat is supplemented with heat from the combined power and heating plants. Vestforbrænding supplies excess heat to two district heating transmission companies covering heat supply in the capital area and the region west of Copenhagen, so that production at power and heating plants is reduced correspondingly.
Vestforbrænding continuously prepares heat plans as a contribution to municipal work with heat planning. Integration of Vestforbrænding’s heat plans with Copenhagen’s heat plan constitutes a long-term strategy up to 2050, when all buildings in the affected municipalities will have converted to either district heating, heat pumps, or individual renewable energy facilities.
