Vestforbrænding is currently extending its district heating grid radically towards the north and the west.
The extension entails conversion of around 300,000 MWh from natural gas to district heating up to 2015. This corresponds approximately to a doubling of Vestforbrænding’s district heating supply to our own grid.

This conversion from natural gas to district heating will in general give consumers savings of 10-20 % of their heating costs.

The environment will also benefit from this project. The extension of the district heating grid substitutes heating with oil or gas, estimated at a 20,000 tonnes reduction of CO2 a year. In the conversion from natural gas to district heating each single household can generally reduce its heat-based CO2 emissions by 86 %.

In connection with this extension Vestforbrænding is also assessing the potential for extension of the district heating system with a district cooling system based on waste incineration.

In using district heating as the supply source of cooling excess heat from waste incineration can be used ensuring that waste heat, which is in excess during summer, can be utilised.

For the individual consumer cooling through district heating means a conversion of energy consumption from ”high quality” energy to ”low quality” energy (power and district heating) and thus savings in the energy budget. Furthermore, district heating based on waste is almost CO2 neutral, contributing to a reduction of environmental impacts from consumers.
